You must register the chip. Microchips are made by different companies so please feel free to call local shelters first and see what one is most common in your area. Each company has a different scanner so some chips may not even be useful in your area if the shelters don't use that kind of scanner. I really suggest you do a lot of research on microchips because they have so many technical issues it may not even be worth it. A collar and tag are still the best thing because regular people don't have chip scanners in their homes if they find a dog. Also take pictures of your dog for ID purposes, sitting, standing, different sides and as they grow.
